Fireworks…Fun or Frightening?

Independence Day is coming up fast and Dog-a-holics wants to make sure you’ve prepared your pets for the celebration!  Do you often find that your dog cowers and hides during thunderstorms?  Fireworks can also cause that same severe anxiety.

Here are some tips to make July 4th a fun and safe holiday for you and your pet:

1) Resist the urge to take your pet to fireworks displays.  You may think having your pet with you will keep him calmer but it is much more dangerous and the pet is at high risk of breaking free and running away.

2) Do not leave your pet in the car.  Far too many pets have experienced serious health problems and even death when left inside a hot car alone.  Leaving the windows partially open does not provide sufficient air either so it would be best to simply leave the pet with friends or at home.

3) Keep your pets indoors at home in a quiet area or with trusted friends at home.  Some animals can become destructive when frightened, so be sure that you’ve removed any items that your pet could destroy or that would be harmful to your pet if chewed. Leave a television or radio playing at normal volume to keep him company and to help block out any noise from the fireworks.

4) Never leave pets outside unattended, even in a fenced yard or on a chain. There have been instances during July 4th celebrations where even the calmest dog has dug a hole under the fence and ran away to find his owners, often resulting in injury and death.

5)  Make sure your pets are wearing identification tags so that if they do become lost, they can be returned promptly. Lost and found pets should be taken to the local animal shelter, where they will have the best chance of being reunited with their owners.

Along with these helpful tips, Dog-a-holics can provide you with a few stress-relieving remedies too!
